The "IF 16"
Leadership Attributes
Number 5: Vision – Having and Sharing a Dream
“If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim...”
Dreaming and thinking big are core capabilities of leadership. They are the keys to creating a compelling vision for others to follow. Dr. Martin Luther King’s compelling vision became the heart of the Civil Rights Movement and led to significant positive change in America.
Articulating a compelling vision requires:
1. Aligning one’s vision and principles
2. Articulating a vision that energizes core constituents while reassuring extended stakeholders
3. Keeping the message simple
4. Repeating the message clearly and often.
